This Torvald excels against teams that have a hard time adapting. If the enemy team stacks up on Cauterize to try and counter your healer, you can answer them with Shields as far as the eye can see. If they focus on Wrecker to bring you down, Lifegiver IV and Glyph of Health III make their lives that much harder if you have a competent healer. You're not going to top the charts for eliminations and damage, but you'll be the living incarnation of a sponge.
Upgrade Path:
Chronos III - So you can keep using Protection and the occasional Nullify
Haven or Blast Shields III - Increases your ability to soak up the damage, alternate depending on your primary threats
Cauterize or Wrecker III - Switch depending on if you're dealing mainly with Shields or Healers
Life Rip or Rejuvenation III - Switch depending on the competence or build of your healer

Glyph of Siphoning I for Arcane Etching I - if you find that you're not doing enough eliminations to activate the first, try this
Glyph of Siphoning I for Vital Grasp I - gives a slight boost to Recharge that can mean all the difference
